15 Awful Films The Avengers Actors Want You To Forget

7. Supernova (2000) - James Spader

RottenTomatoes Score: 10% The Plot: After a search and rescue medical ship, the Nightingale 229, travels to a distant galaxy to answer a distress call, the crew finds themselves endangered by the man they rescue (Peter Facinelli), the alien artifact he smuggles aboard, and the overwhelming gravitational pull of a giant star soon to go supernova. Why It Sucks: To be honest, from the second this hilariously misguided trailer was released, it was pretty obvious that Supernova was going to be a $90 million stinker. The movie's production was rocky enough that director Walter Hill ended up quitting and disowning the film, with director Jack Sholder instead being hired to re-edit the footage, before Francis Ford Coppola was also brought in to help tune things up. Hill envisioned a much more violent and disturbing movie than the final product (which ended up rated PG-13), which despite its massive budget still boasted laughably poor visual effects for its time, and failed to make the most of a talented cast, including Angela Bassett, Lou Diamond Phillips, Robin Tunney and Robert Forster. Spader plays one of the heroes of the piece and, unsurprisingly, spends a lot of the movie walking around with no clothes on (as a lot of the characters do), but there's little he can do to make the aggressively derivative script more interesting, all the way to its majorly anti-climactic ending. With its huge price tag, Supernova ended up being a colossal box office bomb.
