15 Bafflingly High Rotten Tomatoes Scores You Won't Believe
5. Babe
Critical Consensus: "The rare family-friendly feature with a heart as big as its special effects budget, Babe offers timeless entertainment for viewers of all ages." Why It's Wrong: You'd need a heart of stone to call Babe a bad film, but to the same token, is it really a masterpiece worthy of an 8.3/10 average score and a Best Picture Oscar nomination? While the movie's effects have aged relatively well over the last two decades, it just seems too frothy and insubstantial to be worthy of such high praises. Did many viewers honestly walk away from Babe thinking it was anything more than a sweet, funny family film with great effects? Why The Critics Liked It: Though the movie's heartfelt appeal was one aspect that won critics over, its technical prowess must surely contribute a large part of the reason why they gave the film such high ratings. Babe was, of course, the first major talking animal movie where the animals' lips moved convincingly with the dialogue, far away from the cheap "Homeward Bound" option of simply dubbing the dialogue over the top with little effort. Even so, it's still tough to accept the movie getting such rapturous notices.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
