15 Best 2016 Horrors To Watch This Halloween
8. 10 Cloverfield Lane
The Film
The most successful secret film of the year (in terms of the agenda to keep it a mystery), set possibly in the same universe as Cloverfield but without the found footage element and with new aliens.
Why Watch It?
The first three quarters of the film plays out like a typical stalker/captive horror, with Mary Elizabeth Winstead waking up in the Paul Sheldon position and the wonderfully creepy John Goodman playing this film's Annie Wilkes. The best part is you're led to question the validity of Goodman's claims that going outside will kill her right up until the very end when it's confirmed that he actually was telling the truth.
But even then, it's the ultimate "out of the fire..." movie, with Winstead trapped between the known evil of Goodman and the unkown threat outside his stronghold. And while there's at least one too many scenes (her situation should have been left unconfirmed), it's still an entertaining yarn (and particularly watchable for Goodman's explosive performance).
