The Film

The latest addition to the shark attack horror movie, with Blake Liveley stranded on a rock stalked by a killer Great White.

Why Watch It?

There's a reason shark movies work so well (and why Jason Statham fighting a MASSIVE one in the unfortunately named Meg is so exciting) - they're basically giant, reinforced slasher monsters, similarly relentless but with a higher efficiency rate thanks to their lack of humanity. In The Shallows, that element works particularly well, taking a one-woman show that could have been boring to a tense, thoroughly gripping cat and mouse tale.

It's a simple, hugely effectively concept - particularly during the darker scenes and those pressing hard on her isolation and it channels an almost inherent fear: that there's always something lurking in the depths ready to get you. With things like Sharknado out there, this is the kind of reserved, unmuscular thriller that reclaims what shark horrors should all be about.

There's also a seagull in it called Steven Seagull, which might be the greatest thing ever.
