Thor spends a good chunk of the first Thor movie being kind of insufferable. It’s not entirely his fault –when you’re raised to be the leader of a bunch of incredibly powerful Norse gods, it’s bound to get to your head a little. Without this cocky, overly proud persona, the slow conversion of Thor into a genuine hero wouldn’t be nearly as impressive.

When Thor offers himself up to Loki to protect the folks around him, it really feels like he’s become a better person, which takes quality writing and acting to pull off properly.

Managing to show the internal turmoil that has to go on for someone to make a personality change like that seems like a task and a half, and yet Chris Hemsworth manages it with the same amount of struggle it would take him to lift a cheeseburger.
