15 Best Action Movies Of The Last 10 Years
3. Inception
Christopher Nolan’s brand of brainy sci fi has made him one of the most exciting directors in the world, and his 2010 blockbuster Inception might just be his best film to date. It’s a heady mix of high concept craziness and all-out action, using settings and tricks never before seen.
Taking the form of a dream-based heist movie, Inception is endlessly inventive. Setting the film primarily in a man’s subconscious gives Nolan carte blanche to do exactly what he wants, whether that involves crumbling city blocks, skyscrapers folding out at insane angles, or, in the film’s most bravura scene, a crunching fight sequence set in a rotating corridor.
Nolan’s usual suspects, like Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy, show up here, along with Hollywood talent like Leonardo Di Caprio and Joseph Gordon Levitt. This colourful cast of characters keeps the film light and breezy even as the heady concepts pile up (Nolan’s main downfall as a filmmaker is a tendency to take himself incredibly seriously - something he avoids here).
Whether all the theory hangs together is debatable; the important thing is that Inception is a blast, importantly not a remake or a comic adaptation - a genuine cinematic original.
