15 Best Anime Tie-In Movies Of All Time
3. Gintama: The Very Final
One of the best things a tie-in movie can do is reward loyal viewers who've put time into a series. If you're one of the people who watched all 375 episodes of Gintama, then, for one, you have great taste, and secondly, this movie is for you. This bombastic conclusion is so much fun - if a little inaccessible for newcomers - and is a textbook example of using cinema to end a saga.
In this finale of Gintama, the combined forces of the Yorozuya/Shinsengumi lead an attack on the occupied Central Terminal. This leads to them battling against the all-powerful and - somewhat - immortal Utsuro in a final mission to save the world.
The franchise is known for its goofy as hell humour, playing up to in-jokes and emitting a self-awareness that makes it effortlessly charming. That can be found here tenfold as the film's gags break the fourth wall and mock culture in only the way Gintama can.
Additionally, the movie is littered with emotional moments like Gintoki, Shinsuke and Katsura fighting together, the Yorozuya trio reuniting and the demise of some great characters.
It's not a perfect film, but it's a testament to the brilliance of this series.
