4. Made In Abyss: Dawn Of The Deep Soul
Made in Abyss is a show that lures you in with the promise of a fun/cute adventure thanks to the Ghibliesque character designs and quirky visuals. But then, it smacks you across the face and throws you into a world of nightmare fuel. It may look sweet, but it's devilish, and this movie goes all-in on that twisted charm.
Dawn of the Deep Soul shows as Riko, Reg, and Nanachi continue their adventures plunging into the titular Abyss. Upon reaching the 5th layer, they encounter a figure from Nanachi's past and the person who turned her into a Hollow, the White Whistle, Bondrewd. Here, they battle against him to gain access to the 6th layer.
This film manages to be massively fun and soul-crushing at the same time. It balances adventure/action with some of the most harrowing depictions of scientific experimentation ever animated, making it a mixed bag of treats.
Still, the movie's biggest highlight is undoubtedly its villain. Bondrewd is a perfectly layered baddie with a hateable yet oddly alluring charm. He's utterly oblivious to his awful deeds - of which there are many - as he's so fixated on his goals. Chuck in some fantastic character design, and you've got an antagonist for the ages.
