Steins;Gate is an anime that has earned its reputation as one of the best. It's a mind-blowing sci-fi romp that delivers a compelling time travel story and is one of the best uses of the trope ever put to screen (sorry, Back to the Future). Naturally, this movie - which acts as a sequel to the original series - keeps up those appearances.

After the traumatic time-travelling antics of the (self-professed) mad scientist Rintaro Okabe, things have returned to normality. However, once his romantic interest, Kurisu, returns to Japan, he disappears. Now, it's up to her to find a way to keep him from being erased from time.

The shift to Kurisu as the protagonist was a genius way to make this story feel fresh, as she was a fan-favourite part of the original show. She takes the reigns excellently and carries this film on her shoulders.

Overall, the flick gives you everything you can love about Steins;Gate. It's dripping with sentimentality, animated with a simple yet sleek style, and incredibly strong in its writing. The dialogue is as sharp as ever, the characters are just as nuanced, and the conclusion is the perfect way to put a bow on this series - or this world line at least.
