15 Best Anime Tie-In Movies Of All Time
7. Rascal Does Not Dream Of A Dreaming Girl
If someone were to tell you about an anime called Rascal Does Not Dream Of Bunny Girl Senpai, you're probably going to walk away thinking it's one of those shows. The ones that give the medium a bad name.
But, under the surface of that woeful title and advertisement is a genuinely compelling series with a lot to say and much less fan service than you'd expect. This movie is a perfect example of why you should look past the show's odd presentation and see the poignant/well-written story beneath.
The film acts as an epilogue to the series and shows Sakuta and Mai-San living their school days together happily. However, their peace is soon interrupted by the appearance of Sakuta's first love, in two forms, one older and one younger. He soon discovers the part he needs to play in saving her.
Fair warning, you'll need tissues for this one because you'll be crying buckets. The movie takes the narrative to some truly unexpected places, dealing with concepts like terminal illness, sacrifice and the struggles of adolescence.
Additionally, the film blends realism and fantasy wonderfully. The more fantastical elements are treated with nuance and caution, meaning that while things go to outlandish places, it all feels genuine and believable.
