Sometimes the mere idea of a film is funny. The concept of two immature forty-somethings becoming step brothers and reluctantly moving in together is naturally amusing. So, when Step Brothers inherited the same star actors and production/writing team as the brilliant Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby, audiences could be confident that Step Brothers had the heritage to be a success.
The end product is an immature basket case of a movie that allows Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s natural odd-couple comedic energy to coalesce into something truly hilarious. Whilst the film is not for those unamused by the Anchorman stars’ other work, Step Brothers is a more complete movie than many of his other outings, and is almost painfully quotable throughout.
Ferrell and Reilly are the sons you never wanted, but are more than happy to laugh at.
