7. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
At a time when Marvel produce critically acclaimed superhero movies at a success rate that seems only possible through some Back to the Future Almanac-esque trickery, Scott Pilgrim offers audiences a comic book tale with more than a bit of a twist.
Directed by Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy director Edgar Wright and starring Michael Cera as the eponymous Canadian, bass playing slacker Scott Pilgrim, the film is a bizarrely enjoyable concoction, combining video game and comic book visuals with a battle of the band format set in Toronto. The story follows Scott’s seemingly endless battle for the girl he likes, Ramona Flowers, for whom Scott must battle her six evil exes.
Despite being a box-office bomb Scott Pilgrim has garnered a cult following- as was perhaps likely of this witty, 8-bit, eclectic patchwork of a movie. Disorientating and good fun in equal measure, Scott Pilgrim is that moment all the Tetris pieces fit together. Pure joy.
