6. 21 Jump Street
‘Don’t call it a comeback’
proclaimed LL Cool J in 1991’s Mama Said Knock You Out. That year also marked
the finale for the much-loved TV series 21 Jump Street. It might have taken
over twenty years and several rewrites, but thanks to Jonah Hill and Channing
Tatum audiences could finally call it a comeback for America’s favourite
undercover cops.
As with the original series 21 Jump Street follows the exploits of “youthful” undercover cops. Here however it is odd couple Hill and Tatum, who having overcome their differences and become best friends in the academy are out to make a name for themselves as police officers.
With a self-effacing wink to being a reboot and Ice Cube playing the duo’s police captain, 21 Jump Street’s combination of meta humour and belated coming of age tale makes for a joyously funny comedy that not only spawned an equally brilliant sequel, but also made many people enjoy Channing Tatum as an actor.
A remake that puts the original to shame.
