4. Steve Trevor Dies - Wonder Woman

Everyone knew it was coming long before the movie even started, but that didn't stop Steve Trevor's heroic demise being any less affecting when it finally came.

As Diana battles Ares, Steve hijacks General Ludendorff's bomber containing deadly gas with a course set for London, flying it high into the air and detonating it, killing himself by saving potentially thousands of lives in the process.

What really takes this death scene to the next level, though, isn't the bada** plane explosion, but the brilliant character work, such that Trevor's declaration of love, initially to a deafened Diana, feels like a potent payoff to the previous two hours of getting to know these people.

Unlike most superhero movies, the love story here didn't feel totally hokey or shoehorned, and the sacrifice felt like it had weight, in large part thanks to Chris Pine and Gal Gadot's stirring performances.
