Another one thats sadly only available to American Netflix users, Hellboy is a top example of a comic book movie wrangling a hugely enjoyable mainstream film from what may have seemed a very niche subject matter. Guillermo del Toro directs and Ron Perlman stars in this loose adaptation of Mike Mignolas Dark Horse Comics graphic novel Hellboy: Seed Of Destruction. It follows the titular Hellboy, as he works with the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defence to protect the world from supernatural threats. Hellboy was critical darling and a moderate box office success, and its easy to see why, on both counts. Perlman gives a terrific moody performance and del Toro showcases some of his finest pre-Pacific Rim action chops. Visually, as well, this film is stunning, with strange creatures populating the plot throughout. The story is a rather off-the-wall one Hellboy is an infant demon that the Nazis collected from a paranormal dimension towards the end of World War 2. Adopted by the allies, he grows into something of a reluctant antihero, and ends up in a battle against manifold demons both real ones, and ones from his past. If you havent seen it, check it out.
