Those of you with access to American Netflix are in for a treat. If you dont own it on DVD already, you can find Tim Burtons 1989 Batman film nestled among the online streaming services sprawling stateside catalogue. Truly, this is one of the best comic book movies of all time. Jack Nicholson gives one of the best performances of his career with his defining portrayal of Gothams clown prince of crime, The Joker. Battling not to be overshadowed by his characters nemesis, Michael Keaton brings a mysterious presence to his Batman and a quiet charm to his Bruce Wayne. Burton stylises proceedings with gothic glee. Interestingly, this is actually a Joker origin story. While Batman swoops into the movie fully-formed, we get to see Nicholson transform from mobster Jack Napier into DCs biggest supervillain. Once hes in the iconic makeup, he becomes one the most intimidating, unforgettable villains in comic book movie history. Burton manages to juggle the darkness of the Joker with a rather playful tone. Resultantly, we get a movie where Joker dances about to Prince and discusses making art of his girlfriend in the same scene. Rather fittingly - theres room for jokiness among the darkness.
