Jamie Hewlett and Alan Martins British comic Tank Girl was adapted to the filmic realm in 1995, meaning that it predates even Sam Raimis Spider-Man and the first X-Men movie as a cinematic spectacle inspired by comic books. Lori Petty starred as the titular Tank Girl, an antihero who lives in a post-apocalyptic Australia. There, she battles against an oppressive organisation (that seeks control a dwindling water supply) with the help of Jet Girl (Naomi Watts), some genetically-enhanced super soldiers and a ruddy massive tank. The film, while not a critical or commercial success, is visually arresting and features a top notch central performance from Petty. The soundtrack isnt bad, either. It was compiled by Courtney Love, and featured tracks by Bjork, Portishead, Ice-T and Joan Jett. This rocking mix adds to the films charm in a big way. Whilst this one may not become your new favourite comic book movie, its far better than many give it credit for. Definitely worth sticking on your watch list for a rainy day.
