This 2011 superhero origin story introduced us to the otherworldly side of the MCU. It was our first glimpse at Thor, Loki, Odin and the important locale of Asgard. It may not be your favourite MCU movie, but Thor was one of the most important ones. If theyd messed this one up, the Marvel Cinematic Universe may have lost confidence in spacefaring stories. Thankfully, Kenneth Branagh held everything together very well. Using his experience as a director of Shakespeare adaptations, Branagh realised Thors search for worthiness and Lokis rise to villainy as a classic tale of two battling brothers, albeit on a galactic scale. Asgard looks stunning, Chris Hemsworth is just the right amount of charming (I like this drink another! and Tim Hiddleston wowed us all as the god of mischief, Loki. Although his best lines are all in The Avengers, here we get to see how he became the smarmy villain that invaded Earth. Not all the action here is great (the showdown with the Destroyer leaves a lot to be desired), but, for the most part, Thor remains a hugely impressive and watchable spectacle.
