15 Best Dark Fantasy Movies Of All Time
5. The Witch (2015)
The Witch, released in 2015 and directed by new comer Robert Eggers, is the wildcard pick of this list. It is certainly the scariest and most unnerving film, but also the film that shows the least amount of visible dark fantasy elements.
Set on an isolated farm in 1630s New England, a struggling family must deal with a forbidding, spiritual presence living within the surrounding woods. The Gothic setting of New England certainly fills the dark fantasy quota, and the ominous existence of a possible witch provides the film with a clear sense of danger and threat.
However, fulfilling evidence of witchcraft and black magic is rarely explored in the film. This therefore leads the film to be a questionable tale of sanity among an abandoned family.
The Witch has been praised for being a truly terrifying experience - a rare occurrence these days. This film is certainly not for the faint of heart with it being the most difficult watch on this list.
The film sits at an excellent 90% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, and grossed $40 million - which is a solid effort for an independent film that gained cult status due to word-of-mouth among film fanatics.
