15 Best Dark Fantasy Movies Of All Time

4. Edward Scissorhands (1990)

A Monster Calls
20th Century Fox

Don't worry, this is the last Tim Burton film on this list - and, arguably, we've left the best till last. Johnny Depp's role as the titular Edward Scissorhands can be put down as the catalyst for Depp's career. It's the first big, memorable role he ever had, and it lent a big hand to his future iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Tim Burton has a knack for making the most absurd and bizarre films, and Edward Scissorhands is no exception. The film follows a young artificial man, created by an aspiring inventor, who is forced to live his life with incomplete scissor hands following his creator's untimely death. Edward is then adopted by a welcoming suburban family, and encouraged to live a normal life.

Edward Scissorhands is a romantic dark fantasy film depicting an isolated, Gothic protagonist living in a fantasy world. Edward himself is an unusual creature with a nightmarish appearance - akin to the likes of Frankenstein - and his initial home is a foreboding castle.

The film currently sits at a stunning 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and it grossed a worldwide box office return of $54 million against a $20 million production budget. The film also received an Oscar nomination for best makeup.

This is a wholesome dark fantasy feature that modernises an old fable to celebrate our inner oddball.
