15 Best Dark Fantasy Movies Of All Time

12. Corpse Bride (2005)

A Monster Calls
Warner Bros.

We return once again to the iconic duo that is Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, but this time for a creepy stop-motion animation. Corpse Bride, released in 2005, is Tim Burton's first animated feature he directed - bearing in mind that he only served as writer and producer for The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993).

Corpse Bride follows Depp's Victor who accidentally reanimates a dead bride after rehearsing his wedding vows by her grave. Emily, aka The Corpse Bride, voiced by Helena Bonham Carter, now believes Victor to be her husband and sets in motion an unconventional love triangle.

Although a children's animated musical, Corpse Bride still hits all the right notes when it comes to the dark fantasy sub-genre. The Victorian era setting evokes the Gothic atmosphere familiar with dark fantasies, and the undead character's fill the supernatural quota.

The film sits at 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, and has a worldwide box office gross of $118 million. The film also earned an Oscar nomination for best animated feature, but lost out to Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005).

Corpse Bride is the perfect gateway film into the dark fantasy genre for young children.
