12. Ex Machina

Ex Machina is a simmering and violent, science-fiction thriller from writer/director Alex Garland (Annihilation, Devs). The story follows Caleb, a young programmer, who wins the opportunity to work closely with robotics genius Nathan Bateman at his luxury home.

Nathan lives alongside some incredibly lifelike androids and Caleb is tasked with evaluating the human qualities of their artificial intelligence. However, all is not quite what it seems and Nathan's behaviour becomes increasingly erratic...

Ex Machina is a fascinating watch, displaying the same qualities as Isaac Asimov's short robot stories and scrutinising the qualities that make us human, both positive and negative, in a clever and engaging way - something the film version of I, Robot is sorely missing.

It's a thought-provoking experience with some truly terrifying and arresting moments, rounded out with top-tier special effects.
