15 Best Hidden Gem Movies Of 2017
3. Brawl In Cell Block 99
A brutally violent but thoroughly entertaining exploitation
flick, director Craig S. Zahler’s (of Bone Tomahawk fame) second feature film
Brawl in Cell Block 99 stars Vince Vaughn as a former boxer who turns to a life
of crime after he loses his day job, gets locked up and must fight his way
through a maximum security prison to carry out an inside hit lest his pregnant
wife and unborn child die at the hands of some drug lords he’s crossed.
It’s a career-best performance from Vaughn as we’ve never seen them before. Bald-headed, tattooed and looming, he’s a joy to watch as he makes his way through the movie doing some very violent things to some very bad people (and an innocent car) in a nuanced performance that’s both psychotic and sympathetic.
With movies like Brawl in Cell Block 99 and Bone Tomahawk under his belt, Zahler is fast proving a master of grindhouse pulp and we can’t wait to see what he does with his next film Dragged Across Concrete – a gritty police brutality thriller that’ll see him team up with Vaughn once more.
