15 Best Hidden Gem Movies Of 2017
2. Professor Marston And The Wonder Women
While film fans the world over were fixated on a different Wonder Woman movie in 2017, another film about the legendary superheroine flew largely under the radar which is a shame because her real-life origin story is far more interesting than any of her onscreen or on-page antics.
The trio at the heart of Angela Robinson’s biopic – American psychologist and Wonder Woman creator William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans), his wife Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall) and their partner Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote) – were a trail-blazing bunch practicing a bondage-filled, polyamorous relationship in the 1940s a good fifty years before polyamory was even a thing. And it was this unconventional, ahead of its time romance that shaped the creation of one of comic book lore’s most iconic female characters.
A smart and funny biopic that thanks to Angela Robinson’s thoughtful direction is sexy without being exploitative, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women is a must-see for any self-professed Diana Prince fan.
