15 Best Hidden Gem Movies Of 2017
11. The Transfiguration
A self-aware vampire horror that poses the question of whether its protagonist is really an undead bloodsucker or a sociopathic product of his environment, The Transfiguration is the debut feature of Brooklyn-born director Michael O’Shea. It follows disaffected New York City teen and vampire fanatic Mile (Eric Ruffin) as he navigates life in the projects by spending his days watching vampire movies and his nights enacting his fantasies by killing people and drinking their blood.
In a year full of high-profile horrors like It and Get Out, O’Shea’s micro-budgeted indie got kind of buried but it got a lot of love at its Cannes premiere where it screened in the prestigious Un Certain Regard section and at the Independent Spirit Awards where it’s nominated for the John Cassavetes Award which recognises brilliant films with bite-sized budgets.
And for any fans of vampire films who like their movies a little less Twilight, a little more A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night it’s a must-see.
