15 Best Horror Movies Of 2017

IT Pennywise
Warner Bros.

Not only the biggest horror success of 2017, but the breakout hit of the decade so far, the latest adaptation of Stephen King's IT blew the doors off box-office projections when it released over the summer, becoming a cultural phenomenon pretty much overnight.

You can see why, too; the charming cast of kids gave the movie an almost John Hughes sense of warmth and character that everyone could relate to, which made the uncompromising moments of horror even more intense.

Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise grounded the whole film, and thankfully the set-up of the mythical clown adopting the guises of creatures and monsters the children feared allowed the director to get creative with the scares, rather than having to solely rely on the titular villain.

Embracing the hard-R rating like few blockbuster genre films do, IT wasn't afraid to put its young cast in proper peril, reflected perfectly in the surprisingly gory new take on Georgie's iconic death scene.

Sometimes that sharp edge goes a little overboard, with one sub-plot in particular feeling a bit trite and needless, but one small narrative wobble doesn't stop IT from being a genuine horror blockbuster unlike anything audiences have seen in years.
