Despite releasing to good reviews around the board at the start of the year, the grimly dark It Comes At Night received a backlash from audiences thanks to marketing that misrepresented the movie. Showing glimpses of invading monsters emerging from the shadows after sunset, in the actual film the "It" of the title isn't a monster or a creature at all, but rather paranoia and distrust.

If you go in knowing that though, you may be able to appreciate the post-apocalyptic thriller for what it is. Chronicling the lives of two families attempting to live together after an unidentified virus has seemingly ended the world (not in a zombie way, but rather the get-ill-and-start-leaking-blood-from-every-orifice way), the flick is rooted in rising psychological horror rather than battling against literal demons.

Blending reality with surreal nightmares, the post-apocalyptic atmosphere is oppressively bleak throughout, and while that might put some viewers off, there's no denying that It Comes At Night's highly-strung vision of the future leaves a huge impression.
