15 Best Horror Movies To Watch On Netflix This Halloween

2. Rosemary's Baby

Director Roman Polanski's second-best film after the untouchable Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby marks the middle entry of his loose trilogy of "Apartment" films (in-between Repulsion and The Tenant). An absolute master of modern horror and artful thrillers, Polanski's work here serves as his best in the genre, and this power play of a film (most of Polanski's films are power struggles of sorts) delivers greatly in scornful characters. Except the difference here is that instead of the usual horror film occupants, the most disdainful ones here are the characters we - and the eponymous Rosemary - should be able to trust. This is what makes Rosemary's Baby one of the most influential modern horrors: her (Rosemary's) mistrust at those around her is the sign of a new direction for the genre, with European directors like Polanski actively encouraging the viewer to question what is happening, to question what they see - an idea reinforced by the bone-chilling ending, which serves as one of cinema's great ambiguous moments.
