3. The Silence Of The Lambs

This one's been popping up a lot in my articles lately, featuring in my 20 Psychological Thrillers To See Before You Die, and in a couple about performance (which suggest that Anthony Hopkins' turn as Dr. Hannibal Lecter might have been reduced in greatness over time but ultimately conclude that it's still a fine performance in a fine film.) One of the only films to win the Big Five at the Oscars (Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Screenplay), The Silence of the Lambs is a certified great in a couple of genres, from it's mental manipulations to its moments of sheer terror, which render it absolutely a horror picture as well as a psychological thriller. Expertly controlled by director Jonathan Demme, and with a whole host of roles rich in characterisation, Lambs is an obvious entry on a list like this, its brilliance unburdened - for the most part - by great incarnations of the same story that have come later down the line (notably the Hannibal TV series).
