15 Best Jump Scares In Movie History

11. "I Saw Her Face" - The Ring

Gore Verbinski's surprisingly strong J-horror remake begins with the death of protagonist Rachel's (Naomi Watts) niece Katie (Amber Tamblyn), after which her mother Ruth (Lindsay Frost) asks her sister to find out what really happened.

Ruth tells Rachel, "I saw her face", after which there's the briefest two-second cutaway to Ruth discovering Katie's corpse in the closet, complete with a horrifyingly distorted face.

Yes, it makes use of a loud tension chord, but the fact that the scare comes in the middle of a totally quiet dialogue scene makes it unquestionably effective, and it sure doesn't hurt that the visual of Katie's dead body is so damn revolting.
