14. Hush – Killer Gets His Comeuppance
A horror so good it got both the seal of approval from Exorcist director William Friedkin and master horror writer Stephen King, Hush is a home invasion movie with a twist. Directed by Mike Flanagan, the film stars Kate Siegel as reclusive, deaf writer Maddie whose isolated woodland home is stalked by a masked and murderous madman (10 Cloverfield Lane’s John Gallagher Jr).
A tense game of cat and mouse unfolds as the vulnerable yet strong Maddie uses her creativity and heightened remaining senses to outwit the killer and survive.
After being shot in the leg with a crossbow, having her hand crushed and seeing both her friend and boyfriend die, it looks like Maddie is about to finally meet her maker at the hands of the crazed killer as he tries to strangle her to death.
But in a last-minute burst of strength she manages to off her would be killer with the help of a conveniently placed corkscrew which she stabs into his neck. The random corkscrew might be a bit of a deus ex machina, but the gory spurts of blood from the killer’s neck are enough to overlook that.
