4. It – Georgie Denbrough
The horrifying death of the young, innocent Georgie
Denbrough is one of the most memorable moments in both Stephen King’s original
novel and its 1990 TV adaptation so in recreating this scene for the all-new
version of It director Andy Muschietti faced quite the challenge.
Any horror fan worth their salt knew exactly what was coming in this scene but Muschietti manages to make it all his own. In contrast to King’s novel in which the young lad seems to die an agonising but mercifully quick death and unlike the 1990 adaptation in which we see Pennywise’s fangs close in on Georgie’s arm but the most gruesome implications are left to your imagination, Muschietti really amps up the gore and shock factor.
We see Bill Skarsgård’s terrifying Pennywise bite down on Georgie’s arm. We see Georgie, now minus one arm, helplessly try to crawl away. We see him dragged by Pennywise’s unnaturally outstretched arm into the storm drain to a gory and certain death.
It’s a scene that packs all the punches and manages to shock despite its outcome being widely foreknown – a commendable achievement on Muschietti’s part if a harrowing experience for us viewers.
