15 Best Movie Deaths Of 2017
5. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 – Yondu Udonta
In the first Guardians of the Galaxy, Yondu didn’t exactly come across as the most sympathetic of characters after trying to double-cross Quill. But by the time GOTG 2 arrived we saw he’d been exiled from the Ravager community for the crime of intergalactic child trafficking. But the sequel really fleshed out his character too and established the blue-skinned space bandit as the franchise’s most oddly endearing anti-hero.
Which is why his selfless death, sacrificing himself to save his surrogate son Quill, hit us extra hard. It’s in this moment Quill realises that Ego, the bio-dad he’s always wanted to meet, pales into comparison to Yondu – his real father figure. As Yondu says, “He may have been you father, boy, but he wasn’t your daddy.” Sob.
As sad as it is to see the brilliant Michael Rooker’s departure from GOTG, Yondu’s death is a touching and beautifully redemptive moment that sees the bad guy come good and cements him as one of GOTG’s most memorable characters.
