After their first collaboration in 2015 with dystopian dark comedy The Lobster, Colin Farrell and director Yorgos Lanthimos teamed up again last year with The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Like many of Lanthimos’ films it’s a mixture of satire and black comedy, but this time with a hearty dose of psychological horror.

Farrell plays Steven Murphy, a heart surgeon whose negligence killed a patient and years later finds his family under a curse placed by the patient’s creepy teenage son Martin (the brilliantly sinister Barry Keoghan). As revenge for his father’s death, the curse will gradually kill all of Steven’s family unless he offs one of them first.

Which leads us to its most unforgettable scene. With his two kids Kim and Bob getting progressively sicker and unable to make the choice of who to kill, a blindfolded Steven lets a lethal game of spin-the-bottle with a gun decide the outcome.

While his wife and kids are restrained he spins in circles firing at random with a few missed shots ramping up the tension before he finally hits and kills his young son. A macabre and abrupt ending to a mesmerizingly unsettling movie.
