15 Best Movie Deaths Of 2017
7. Blade Runner 2049 – K
The realisation that Blade Runner 2049’s K was in fact not the replicant-human hybrid love child of Deckard and Rachel but rather just another skin-job is a devastating one thanks to Ryan Gosling’s nuanced performance as the vulnerable humanoid.
But the fact K still chooses to help the replicant resistance movement after learning he’s not the Chosen One and fights to unite Deckard with his real child (memory designer Dr Ana Stelline) means he also chooses to be more than just your average, run-of-the-mill skin-job and becomes – to borrow the old Tyrell Corporation’s motto – more human than human.
It’s this that makes K’s death – a poignant homage to Roy Batty’s demise in the original Blade Runner – all the more emotional. After taking a bloody beating off Wallace’s replicant henchwoman Luv, he delivers Deckard to his daughter and lies down on the steps outside her laboratory and succumbs to his wounds as snow falls around him and Vangelis’ Tears in the Rain plays over the scene. Time to die.
