6. Get Out – Rose Armitage

The death of Rose in Jordan Peele’s smash hit horror Get Out was definitely one of 2017’s most satisfying. After Chris has escaped his impromptu neurosurgery he’s pursued by a gun-toting Rose and Walter who is really her grandfather Roman, the master mind behind the whole scheme. He’s almost subdued before he uses his camera flash to reawaken the real Walter who shoots Rose in the gut before turning the gun on himself.

Peele then plays around with the old ‘Not Quite Dead’ trope when we see a still alive Rose reach for the gun before Chris stops her. As she sweet-talks and pleads with him, we see a police car arrive and assume it’s going to down the same way as Chris’ earlier brush with law enforcement.

But as the duplicitous Rose pulls the helpless white woman card and calls out for help from the cop, we see it’s actually Chris’ friend Rod and Rose can only watch as they drive away while she bleeds out. It’s a brilliant scene that subverts our expectations with a gratifyingly grim end for Rose and a (relatively) happy ending for our hero Chris.
