Whether or not you got fully on-board with the surprising third-act twist in Jason Reitman's comic drama, there's no arguing with the compassionate brilliance of Charlize Theron's performance as an overworked mother.

Theron gained a ton of weight for the role, which combined with a stripped-down approach to costume and make-up, ensure her glamourous good looks take an easy backseat to the achingly honest work at the core.

As a tribute to the toils of motherhood, it's wonderful work. It'll have an uphill struggle snagging Charlize an Oscar nomination due to the film's soft box office, but she's more than deserving of another nod (which would be her first in 13 years).
