15 Best Movies About Cults
4. Midsommar
Ari Aster is two for two on this list as his second and most recent film also makes the cut. Midsommar is a brilliant exercise in what can be scary in broad daylight.
After a horrific family tragedy occurs, Dani (played by a fantastic Florence Pugh) travels with her disinterested boyfriend and his friends to Sweden to experience a rural community's mid-summer festival.
What follows is an increasingly strange and progressively dangerous event orchestrated by a pagan cult. Midsommar takes plenty of inspiration from a horror classic (more on that later) but also does enough to stand independent of those comparisons and be its own thing.
Aster's trippy and surrealist visuals will be burned into your brain long after you finish watching and his deft control of disturbing imagery is even more impressive than his feature film debut.
The overt friendliness of the cult contrasted with their strange and worrying actions makes Midsommar an unforgettable experience and one of the best films about cults in recent years.
