As one of the most surreal and inventive films of all time, it is sometimes easy to forget that at the heart of Being John Malkovich is a cult that are trying to live inside the titular actor. Charlie Kaufman's debut script is as whacky and eccentric as his entire filmography and still, to this day, has one of the most unique plots in all of cinema.

When a snivelling puppeteer finds a portal that leads directly into the head of Hollywood actor John Malkovich, a strange cat and mouse game between a group of lovers takes place as they periodically use Malkovich's body to further their own schemes.

Eventually it becomes clear that a cult of powerful individuals that want to live forever monitor the portal until Malkovich becomes 'ripe' before inhabiting him permanently.

The portal then moves onto someone else and the cycle repeats. It is incredibly strange but in a wholly original way that makes it one of the craziest concepts ever permitted to actually be made.
