15 Best Movies About Cults
12. The Babysitter
Brian Duffield's script for The Babysitter was an unexpected rollercoaster of thrills and witty comedy that makes it one of the most surprisingly good entries on this list.
After a young boy who is obsessed with his attractive and fun-loving babysitter decides he wants to spy on her and her friends after he is supposed to be sleeping, he gets more than he bargained for when he discovers she is the leader of a satanic cult.
The Babysitter is a genre bending slasher film that breaks conventions and doesn't overstay its welcome. A frankly phenomenal performance from Samara Weaving as the babysitter in question provides an incredible showcase for her talents as her versatility from comedic hero to terrifying villain is seamless.
The cult themselves is made up of horror movie victim stereotypes (the jock, the cheerleader, etc.) that are getting the chance to be the bad guys for a change.
The Babysitter is smart subversion of genre expectations and is a great time from start to finish. The sequel on the other hand, is best avoided.
