15 Best Netflix Original Movies You Probably Missed
1. Virunga
The Plot: A documentary following the brave attempts made to preserve the Congo's Virunga National Park, against not merely poachers and the surrounding oil interests, but also the violent war terrorising the region.
Despite scoring a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and even being nominated for a Best Documentary Oscar, there's a good chance you've not heard of Virunga. Even with its high-profile Oscar nod, it quickly came and went, and is barely spoken about these days.
It's a shame, because this is one of the most distressingly intimate and soul-stirring docs of the last few years, capturing both the immense beauty of the park and its gorilla inhabitants, and the profoundly human ugliness that surrounds it.
Gorgeously shot during even some almost unbearably tense real-life set-pieces, Virunga makes its argument with vital sledgehammer force, and it's the one movie above all others on this list that desperately needs a bigger push from the streaming giant.
