7. To The Bone
The Plot: 20-year-old college dropout Ellen (Lily Collins) enters an unconventional treatment program to deal with her anorexia, headed up by a no-nonsense doctor (Keanu Reeves).
Based in part on the life experiences of writer-director Marti Noxon, To the Bone is completely anchored by Lily Collins' magnificently committed central performance, having suffered herself with an eating disorder in the past.
It's hard to imagine a film that more convincingly gets inside the head of someone ailed by anorexia, painting a grim but ultimately hopeful picture of what it's like to suffer with the debilitating disease.
Bar a few missteps in act three, this is a riveting slice-of-life drama with Collins well and truly proving her chops, while Keanu Reeves provides unexpectedly strong support in a totally against-type role.
