15 Best Original Movie Characters Of 2016
6. Darcy Banker - Green Room
Some casting choices are so bizarre they demand our attention. For example: in 2016 Patrick Stewart played a neo-Nazi. We all know Patrick Stewart is an incredibly talented actor, but he is most well known among movie audiences for playing stern father-figures like Charles Xavier or Jean-Luc Picard. And Green Room did the impossible by casting him completely against type, but in a role that only Patrick Stewart could do justice.
Green Room is a fairly simple setup - a punk band desperate for gigs decide to play at a neo-Nazi bar for the money. Less than 24 hours later, they are all trapped inside, while a gang of skinheads scheme about the best ways to dispatch them without getting caught. The leader of this gang is Darcy Banker, the soft spoken, yet effortlessly commanding, owner of the bar. He negotiates with the anxiety ridden protagonists with disconcerting calm, while setting up their demise like a chess master. It's truly unsettling to watch such a likable gentleman such as Stewart embody such a despicable human.
But what makes this character incredible is the baggage the actor carries with him. Since we see both sides of the conflict, halfway through the film we realize that Darcy Banker is this gang's wise mentor figure - a father figure they're eager to appease. He's basically an Alt-Right version of Professor X.
