15 Best Original Movie Characters Of 2016
7. Jaylah - Star Trek Beyond
Unlike James Bond, Mad Max, or any other episodic genre series, classic Star Trek doesn't generally get a lot of mileage out of its supporting cast. While characters like Khan (in Wrath of Khan not Into Darkness) make an impression, for the most part the strength of the films have always been the chemistry between the crew of the Enterprise. That is one area in which the J.J. Abrams led reboot saga has stayed absolutely true to the original series - supporting characters are there, and played competently, but never really steal any scenes.
This trend is broken in Star Trek Beyond by Jaylah, an alien woman who meets the Enterprise crew when they crash land on a deserted planet. This marks the second time that Sofia Boutella has played a relatively underwritten but scene stealing character in a blockbuster - though in all fairness, Jaylah gets much more dialogue than Gazelle did in Kingsman.
Bursting with personality and a creative but not overdone design, Jaylah immediately commands the screen from the moment she saves Scotty from Krall's henchmen. While much of her strength as a character is implied rather than shown, Boutella's performance makes us want to see more of her in the next Star Trek film.
