8. David - The Lobster

Mainstream Hollywood really doesn't know how to properly use Collin Farrel. Most of his appearances in larger budget films have him playing stoic leading men type roles rather than the more colorful character roles he is more suited for. Case in point: The Lobster, 2016's divisive Black Comedy about what it would be like if Rod Serling made a Twilight Zone Episode about Tinder.

Checking himself into a matchmaking hotel with a dog that used to be his brother, David is an extremely dour sad sack of a man who judges others based on a single personality trait each. With a ticking clock to chose a mate before he'd get turned into a Lobster, David's desperation is constantly present, but never overstated. And once he chooses to flee, we get to see how his circumstance changes in the exact opposite direction.

This is a character in the tradition of classic dystopian protagonists like Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984 - individuals trapped in a system they're deeply unhappy with, but powerless to change. Farrel's dry comedic timing is the greatest strength of this bizarre film, and he sells every moment right up to the gut wrenching final shot. There's no better performer for making a depressed person so hilarious.
