15 Best Performances In MCU Movies (So Far)
2. Mark Ruffalo - Bruce Banner
Since the superhero boom of the early ‘00s, The Hulk has been a particularly difficult role to cast. Edward Norton and Eric Bana both had a go at putting their stamp on the character, and while neither did a bad job, the drabness of the films meant that their portrayals never quite caught on.
Surprisingly, it was indie darling and all round good egg Mark Ruffalo who finally provided us with a definitive big green guy. More specifically, it’s his performance as scientist alter ego Bruce Banner that brings the house down in his every appearance.
Ruffalo has stupendous chemistry with every member of the cast - Scarlett Johansson and Chris Hemsworth most notably - and his sad, wry performance is the glue that holds the Avengers movies together. One of the more subtle actors in the cast, Ruffalo betrays Banner’s inner rage in dribs and drabs.
His lack of a superheroic physique makes him all the more believable - The Hulk isn’t a gift, it’s a curse, and he’s sure to keep that clear at all times. He is yet to have his own movie, but when he does, it’ll surely be one of the best.
