Writer-director Ari Aster makes what's already becoming one of 2018's most talked-about directorial debuts with this spine tingling horror flick about a family dealing with the death of their matriarch, after which they find themselves encountering paranormal phenomena.

Most critics urged horror fans to go into the film as blind as possible, while universally praising Toni Collette's central performance and Aster's direction, which bears no hallmarks of a newbie filmmaker.

Though Sundance horror hits do have a habit of dividing more mainstream audiences, critics insist it takes a familiar haunted house concept and runs it into unexpected and highly terrifying new dimensions.

Hereditary is in cinemas June 8th.
