2. The Tale

The Tale Laura Dern
Untitled Entertainment

By far the most fiercely discussed and controversial film to screen at this year's festival, The Tale is inspired by writer-director Jennifer Fox's own experiences with sexual abuse as a child, and doesn't seem to pull any punches.

Laura Dern may very well earn another Oscar nomination for her work as a middle-aged Jennifer if the film's buzz can sustain, while Isabelle NĂ©lisse is also said to be fantastic as a teenage version of the character.

Though critics have generally called the film's matter-of-fact depiction of rape discomforting, it'd be dishonest if it was anything but, and it's been universally lauded regardless.

While this year was considered a bit soft for meaty awards contenders, The Tale has a damn good shot at earning at least a few nominations.
