15 Best Romantic Films On Netflix Right Now
9. Love Story
An old classic for this list, they don't come any cheesier and more deliberately pulling at the heartstrings than this 1970 smash. Making over $100 Million on a paltry $2 Million budget, this is the film that is the reason/blame for so many copycat films about a loving couple torn apart by a terminal illness. This plot line alone should tell you enough as to if this movie will be to your liking or not, in a story purely designed to have you balling your eyes out by film's end.
While the story is awfully cliched, the acting of Ali McGraw and Ryan O'Neal as loving couple Oliver and Jenny makes the journey an engaging one. The obstacles they face to be together, notably Oliver's disapproving parents, are pretty standard fare, but it is the moment when Jenny is diagnosed with a terminal illness that the film's stakes are upped significantly.
McGraw and O'Neal's investment in their characters journey and grief makes us buy in to the story as well, the final moments of Jenny's life bringing tears to anyone with a heart. It may be super manipulative, but boy does it do it well.
