A Rom-Com that actually falls flat on the comedy part of the equation, with the attempts at humour feeling like it comes from a dodgy 80's sit-com. Thankfully the romance elements are right on track, even if Hugh Grant was a little too popular at the time to really embody the no-name book store owner who ends up in a relationship with a Hollywood megastar.
Julia Roberts plays the character of Anna Scott, who is a very poorly disguised version of herself, who comes across Hugh Grant's Will in his bookstore, before a chain of events leads to the two dating. Rhys Ifans threatens to ruin proceedings with his terribly unfunny flatmate Spike, who we are meant to be cheering for even though he acts like an absolute prat.

A scene in which Anna attends a family dinner with Will and competes for a 'cookie' with their sad life stories proves heartwarming and heartbreaking in equal measure. These scenes with Will's extended family prove a great contrast to Anna's supposed grand life, managing to allow the audience to feel genuine empathy with all the characters
